Itinéraire de La Star-Spangled Banner

Cette route panoramique de 100 miles (environ 160 kilomètres), suit la campagne de Chesapeake, menée durant la guerre de 1812, quand les troupes britanniques avançaient le long de la Chesapeake Bay; elle s'est terminée par la bataille de Baltimore, rendue célèbre par le poème de Francis Scott Key : « Star-Spangled Banner ».

Premier jour: Les lieux historiques épousent la nature et la culture

Calvert Marine Museum

Situé à Solomons, village de pêcheurs, ce musée expose des objets guerriers et retrace les mouvements de troupes, lorsque les Américains combattaient les forces britanniques, toujours plus grandes et mieux armées.

Jefferson Patterson Park et Museum

Ce centre archéologique et historique raconte deux batailles qui se sont déroulées en juin 1814, durant lesquelles la « Chesapeake Flotilla » de la marine américaine a failli être capturée.

Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary

Benedict

Les troupes britanniques choisirent cette ville au bord de l'eau comme base, qu'ils trouvaient adaptée à leur projet d'envahissement de Washington. Aujourd'hui, Benedict est connue pour ses activités de pêche et de voile, ses restaurants de fruits de mer, et la guerre de 1812.

Mount Calvert Historical and Archaeological Park

Les forces navales britanniques débarquent à Mount Calvert pour rejoindre l'armée, qui se prépare à attaquer Washington. Aujourd'hui, faites-vous plaisir en admirant la vue spectaculaire sur le fleuve Patuxent, puis profitez des loisirs et des activités culturelles à Upper Marlboro, juste à côté.

Deuxième jour: Plaisir au bord de mer sur la côte Est

St. Michaels

Une petite escapade de l'autre côté du pont Chesapeake Bay Bridge, sur la rive Est, vous amènera à St Michaels, connue pour être « The Town that Fooled the British », la ville qui berna les Britanniques; depuis une nuit estivale de 1813 durant laquelle, pour désorienter un bombardement naval des Britanniques, on suppose que les habitants avaient éteint toutes leurs lumières et pendu des lanternes aux arbres au nord de la ville. Aujourd'hui, St Michaels est un village pittoresque au bord du fleuve, avec ses boutiques, restaurants et attractions maritimes.

Troisième jour: Un fort monumental : Là où naquit l’hymne national américain

Bladensburg

De retour sur la rive Ouest, un parc le long du fleuve à Bladensburg offre des panoramas sur l'étroit pont Anacostia River Bridge, que les forces britanniques ont traversé pour attaquer les défenses américaines pendant la bataille de Bladensburg, le 24 août 1814.

Riversdale House Museum

Après la bataille de Bladensburg, les esclaves de Riversdale aidèrent à enterrer les soldats britanniques et américains tués pendant la bataille. Cette maison de plantation datant de la période fédérale propose des visites guidées.

Baltimore et Fort McHenry National Monument

Site de la défense victorieuse contre la flotte britannique à l'issue de la bataille de Baltimore, du 12 au 14 septembre 1814, qui a inspiré Francis Scott Key pour son poème : « The Star-Spangled Banner ».
