La bataille d’Antietam : Lee envahit le Maryland

Cette route de 90 miles (environ 145 kilomètres) offre une visite historique et panoramique du chemin parcouru. Le long de cette route, vous aurez le loisir de faire de la randonnée, du vélo, vous baigner, monter à cheval, visiter des musées artistiques et historiques, des vignobles et faire les boutiques.

Cette route de 90 miles (environ 145 kilomètres) offre une visite historique et panoramique du chemin parcouru par Robert E. Lee en septembre 1862, dans sa tentative de gagner du renfort de l'étranger pour sa cause sudiste. Cette campagne se conclut sur la victoire de l'Union, dont le président Lincoln avait besoin avant d'annoncer la proclamation (PROCLAMATION) de libération des esclaves. (ESCLAVES)

Première journée: Fameuses traversées en ferry et le légendaire « Ordre perdu »

Leesburg (Loudoun Museum)

La visite « Antietam Campaign Tour » commence ici, où Lee avait installé l'armée de la Virginie du Nord avant d'envahir le Maryland.

White’s Ferry

Une grande partie de l'armée de Lee a navigué sur le fleuve Potomac jusqu'au Maryland, deux miles (environ trois kilomètres) au nord, à bord de ce ferry moderne, à White's Ford, pendant qu'un groupe de musique confédéré jouait : « Maryland ! My Maryland ! »

Sugarloaf Mountain

A différentes périodes, les signaleurs de l'Union et des Confédérés ont surveillé du sommet de cette montagne l'armée adversaire.

Monocacy National Battlefield (Best Farm)

C'est probablement le site ou le fameux « Lost Order » (« ordre perdu » faisant partie des ordres spéciaux, n°191) a été trouvé; il donnait la stratégie de campagne du général Robert E. Lee.

Puis, en juillet 1864, le général de l'Union Lewis Wallace organise une défense entêtée et retarde pendant deux jours l'avancée du général confédéré Jubal A. Early sur Washington.

Deuxième jour: Exploration des lieux historiques marquants et du sentier des Appalaches

National Museum of Civil War Medicine

Principal centre pour la conservation et la  recherche concernant l'héritage de la Guerre civile dans le domaine de l'innovation médicale.

Barbara Fritchie House

Dans le célèbre poème de John Greenleaf Whittier, une vieille dame loyale brandît les étoiles et les rayures, et ridiculisa Stonewall Jackson.

Fox’s Gap

Trois jours avant Antietam, des batailles ont lieu dans trois « trouées » de la South Mountain. Deux généraux, l'un de l'Union, l'autre confédéré, meurent au combat pour gagner la trouée.

De l'Appalachian National Scenic Trail jusqu'au « Turner Gap », non loin, de belles randonnées sont à faire.

Boonsboro

C'est là que le général Robert E. Lee avait installé son quartier général, pendant la bataille de South Mountain.

Troisième journée: Antietam : Le jour le plus mortel

Antietam National Battlefield

Ce champ de bataille vît la bataille la plus sanglante de l'histoire américaine, qui dura un jour, le 17 septembre 1862.
